How to set up your Google Business Profile so AI recommends you

The 60-second version
  • Your Google Business Profile is the biggest single thing AI leans on. Finish it properly.
  • List every service as its own line, not one vague 'plumbing' entry.
  • Set your exact service area by suburb, pick the right categories, and put your real hours.
  • Answer your own Q&A before a customer answers it wrong, and add real photos of real work.
  • Consistency with your website and directories is what makes AI confident enough to name you.

Of everything you own online, your Google Business Profile is the one that most decides whether AI recommends you. It feeds Google Maps, Google's own AI answers, and it's one of the cleanest, most structured things ChatGPT and Gemini can read about you. Most businesses half-finish it. Here's how to finish it properly, field by field.

Why does the Google Business Profile matter so much to AI?

Because it's structured, verified and easy to read. Where your website is messy free text and your social pages are noise, your Google Business Profile is clean fields: name, category, services, area, hours, reviews. AI trusts structured, verified data over marketing copy, so a complete profile gives an engine the confidence to put your name forward instead of a competitor's.

Every line here is something AI can read and trust. Most profiles are half-empty.

How should I list my services?

List every service as its own separate line, in plain words, not one vague catch-all. "Plumbing" tells the AI almost nothing. The 40-second answer: spell out each individual job you do so that when someone asks AI for that specific job, your profile is an exact match. Vague profiles get skipped for specific ones.

A plumber lists hot water replacement, blocked drains, burst pipe repair, gas fitting, leak detection, separately. A sparky lists switchboard upgrades, safety switches, EV charger installs, downlights, fault finding. A landscaper lists reticulation, paving, retaining walls, lawn and turf, garden design. Whatever you actually do, name each one. When a customer asks AI "who does EV charger installs in Scarborough," you want to be the profile that literally says EV charger installs.

How do I set my service area correctly?

Set the exact suburbs you actually cover, not just "Perth." If you're a service-area business (you go to the customer rather than them coming to you), Google lets you list the specific suburbs you serve. Use it. List the real ones. "Perth" is too broad for AI to match against a suburb-level question, and over-claiming the whole metro can read as less trustworthy than an honest, specific list.

In our test of 48 Perth searches, the businesses that got named consistently were the ones whose coverage was clear and specific, suburb by suburb. Vague "we cover all of Perth" businesses were easier to skip.

Which categories should I choose?

Pick the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories for everything else you genuinely do. Your primary category is the heaviest signal: a plumber's primary should be "Plumber," not "Contractor." Then add secondaries (Gas installation service, Drainage service, Hot water system supplier) for the other things you do. Don't stuff categories that don't apply, that confuses the match. Be accurate and complete.

What about hours, including emergencies?

Put your real hours, and if you do emergency callouts, set "Open 24 hours" honestly. Hours are a live signal AI uses to decide who to recommend right now. A customer asking "who's open now" at 9pm gets handed whoever's profile says they're open. If you genuinely do after-hours work, say so. If you don't, don't fake it, getting called at 2am and not answering teaches the AI to stop sending you those jobs.

Should I fill in the Q&A section myself?

Yes, before a random customer answers it wrong for you. The Q&A on your profile is public and anyone can answer it. If you leave it blank, a stranger may post a wrong answer that AI then reads as fact. Get in first: post the real questions you get asked ("Do you charge a callout fee?", "Which suburbs do you cover?", "Do you do gas work?") and answer them yourself, in plain words. That's clean, quotable text AI can lift straight into a recommendation.

Do photos actually matter for AI?

Yes, real ones do. Add genuine photos of real work, your team and your van, not stock images. Photos signal an active, real business (and they help with Google ranking and customer trust), which feeds the overall "this business is alive and legit" picture an AI builds. A profile with recent, authentic photos reads as current. One with no photos or obvious stock reads as abandoned.

Why does consistency matter across everything?

Because mismatched details make AI hesitate. The single biggest thing that makes an engine confident enough to name you is the same business name, address, phone, services and suburbs everywhere it looks, your profile, your website, hipages, Yelp, Facebook. If your profile says one thing and your website says another, the AI can't tell which is right, so it plays safe and recommends someone whose story is consistent.

A complete, consistent profile is what gives an AI the confidence to put your name forward instead of someone else's.

The quick checklist

Run through this once and you're ahead of most of your competition:

  • Every service listed as its own plain-text line
  • Exact service-area suburbs set (not just "Perth")
  • Accurate primary category plus relevant secondaries
  • Real hours, with honest emergency/24-hour settings
  • Q&A answered by you, before anyone else does
  • Recent, real photos of actual work
  • Name, phone, address and services matching everywhere else online
  • Recent reviews, replied to (see why this matters in our research on what AI picked)
