AI search vs Google search: what's actually different for a Perth business?

The 60-second version
  • Google gives a list and lets the customer choose. AI hands over a shortlist and makes the choice for them.
  • On Google there's a page two. With AI there isn't: you're one of the named few, or you don't exist.
  • Both reward the same fundamentals: a complete Google Business Profile, plain-text info and recent reviews.
  • AI leans heavily on directories and reviews, not just your website, so your off-site presence matters more.
  • You don't have to choose between them. The work that wins AI also wins Google.

People keep asking us whether AI search "replaces" Google, and whether they need to throw out everything they've done on SEO. The honest answer is no: they overlap more than they differ. But the differences that exist are the ones that decide whether you get the customer. Here's the side-by-side.

Google search hands the customer a list of options and lets them choose: ten blue links, a map pack, some ads. AI search skips the list. Ask ChatGPT or Google's AI answer for a good plumber and it names two or three and tells the customer why. Google helps people choose; AI chooses for them. That single shift changes everything downstream.

AI search vs Google search, side by side

Here's how the two compare on the things that actually matter to a local business:

What mattersOld Google searchAI search
What the customer seesA list of ~10 results plus ads and a map packA shortlist of two or three businesses, named
Who makes the choiceThe customer, by scrolling and comparingThe AI, before the customer sees options
Is there a "page two"?Yes, you can rank lower and still be foundNo, you're named or you're invisible
Main thing it readsYour website, keywords, backlinksYour Google Business Profile, reviews, directories, plain-text info
How you winRank high enough to get clickedBe clean and consistent enough to get named
Where the proof comes fromMostly your own pages and links to themMostly third-party: reviews, directories, social, forums
What kills youBeing buried on page twoBeing unreadable or inconsistent, so the AI skips you

Is AI search actually replacing Google for local businesses?

Not replacing, layering on top. Google still drives huge local volume, and Google itself now puts an AI-generated answer above the normal results on a large share of searches, so the two are merging. The practical takeaway: a customer increasingly gets a recommendation before they ever scroll. Whether that recommendation comes from ChatGPT or from Google's own AI box, the dynamic is the same: a shortlist, not a list.

Who’s a good emergency plumber in Perth right now?
A couple are open and nearby:

RapidFlow Plumbers
4.7★ · open now
This is the whole shortlist a customer sees. You’re on it, or you’re invisible.

Does old-school SEO still matter, or is it dead?

It still matters, it's just no longer enough. Classic SEO got you onto the list and let the customer pick. That still happens for the people who scroll. But more and more of them don't scroll: they take the AI's shortlist at face value. So SEO that gets you to position six is worth a lot less than it used to be, because position six is below the AI answer that already named someone else. You need both: rank well and be the named pick.

What do AI and Google reward in common?

Here's the good news, and the reason you don't have to pick a side. The fundamentals that win AI are the same ones that have always won local Google:

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile. Google's own ranking signal and the single biggest thing AI leans on. Every service spelled out, exact service area, right categories, real hours.
  • Plain-text information. Services, prices and areas in actual words, not locked inside a JPG or PDF. Google can't index an image and AI can't read one.
  • Recent, replied-to reviews. A ranking factor on Google and one of the heaviest things AI weighs when choosing between two businesses.
  • Consistency everywhere. Same name, address and details across your site, Maps and directories. Mismatched details hurt Google rankings and make AI hesitate to name you.

Do these and you're not choosing between Google and AI. You're winning both with one set of work.

The work that gets you named by AI is the same work that's always won local Google. You're not picking a side, you're doing the fundamentals well.

What's the one thing that's genuinely new with AI?

The off-site weight. In our own test of 48 Perth searches across three AI engines, just over half of everything the AI cited was directories and reviews (Facebook, hipages, Yelp, Reddit, Oneflare), not business websites. Google reads your site closely; AI reads what the rest of the web says about you. So a thin Facebook page or an empty hipages profile costs you more in the AI world than it ever did on Google. (We wrote up that test in full: we asked three AI engines for the best tradies in Perth.)

So what should a Perth business do?

Don't abandon Google and don't panic about AI. Do the fundamentals that serve both: finish your Google Business Profile properly, put everything in plain text, build recent reviews, and make sure your details match everywhere AI looks. That's the whole playbook, and it future-proofs you whichever way search keeps tilting.
